Raku Horse - Smoked Crackle

Little Raku Dear One.

This one has just a clear glaze over white clay. The glaze melts in the high temp of the gas firing but the magic really happens after.

I pulled this wee one out with tongs while red hot and waved him briefly in the cool air which cooled him so rapidly that the glaze crackled under the tension.

The veins are coloured black by the smoke when I placed him in the sawdust which bursts into flames (he was still darn hot). After a moment of flames licking the surface of him, I put the lid on, the billowing smoke trapped within impregnating the clay where it can reach it through the cracks of glaze, staining it black.
